He was an English geographer (mapmaker) and member of the Arrowsmith family of geographers. He moved to Soho Square, London from Winston, County Durham when about twenty years of age, and was employed by John Gary, the engraver and led for some years the office of hydrographer to the king. In January 1790 he made himself famous by his large chart of the world on Mercator projection. Four years later he published another large map of the world on the globular projection, with a companion volume of explanation. The maps of North America (1796) and Scotland (1807) are the most celebrated of his many later productions. He left two sons, Aaron and Samuel, the elder of whom was the compiler of the Eton Comparative Atlas, of a Biblical atlas, and of various manuals of geography.
The business was thus carried on in company with John Arrowsmith (1790-1873), nephew of the elder Aaron. In 1821, they published a more complete North American map from a combination of a maps obtained from the Hudson Bay Company and Aaro...

'Föddes i Ilmola socken af Wasa län i Finland, d. 27 Febr. 1774. Fadern, Carl H., var der då Pastors-Adjunct, men blef sedan Comminister. Modern var Anna Rein. Student i Åbo 1792, Phil. Mag. 1795, undergick derefter examen i Lagfarenheten och ingick i Bergs-Collegium, der han 1796 blef Auscultant och året derpå Geschworner. Förflyttades 1801 såsom Ingenieur till Landtmäteri-Contoiret; 1802 Premier Ingenieur, några år derefter Capitaine vid Sjömätningscorpsen samt 1809 Förman för Sjö-chart-archivet. Under tiden Ledamot i K. Strömrensningscomitéen, i hvilken egenskap han utförde många gagneliga förrättningar. När denna indrogs, blef H. 1827 Chef för Norra Canaldistrictet, samt 1830 Contoirschef för Expeditionerna. Sedan 1810 Major vid flottan, erhöll han 1826 Öfverste-Lieut:s n. h. o. v. R. W. O. 1818. Holländsk kopparstickare. Hans första verksamhet var i Amsterdam där han först omnämns år 1682. 1688-89 var han mästare i Lukasgillet i Antwerpen, 1696-1714 återfinns han i Bryssel och 1727 i Haag. Han omnämns en sista gång 1732. Förmodas död innan år 1740. En mängd kopparstick vet man kommer från hans händer, varav flera bilder med historiska motiv, porträtt, planer, stadsplaner och kartor, samt konstnärliga titelblad.
