One of the most famous of English mapmakers, the historian John Speed decided in 1611 to publish a volume of maps to accompany his History of Great Britain. The maps were instantly popular, running to seven editions by 1676. Sudbury and Humble contracted Jodocus Hondius to engrave the plates in Amsterdam. From 1605 to 1610 Speed sent the information to Hondius, allowing Hondius to compose these famous maps.

The first printed atlas of Africa. Sannuto’s Geographia was intended as a compendium of world geography, but the project was curtailed by his death. Only the first part, devoted to Africa, was ever published, and that posthumously. Skelton describes the Geographia as a “methodical and precisely documented description of the geography of Africa” and notes the “critical sense” exercised in the compilation of the maps, engraved by Sanuto’s brother Giulio.
It is unfortunate that the work was left incomplete, as Skelton suggests it would have been “among the masterpieces of Renaissance geography”; the fact it was incomplete may help explain its rarity on the market today.

Engelsk förläggare och kartograf. 1668 etablerade han sig som förläggare. 1680 påbörjade han utgivningen av ett stort atlasverk, 'English Atlas' efter mönster av de holländska kartverken, först och främst Janssonius (se denne), vars arvingar han arbetat tillsammans med. Pitt blev emellertid ruinerad efter att de 4 första banden utkommit och verket blev aldrig slutfört. Pitt själv blev satt i häkte under en tid och skrev sedan en uppseendeväckande bok om förhållandena där, 'The Cry of the Oppressed' (1691).
